About
A magazine that reads hotels designed by architects through their architecture. Like the single line drawn before building, one ink line runs through this page.
Introduction
Staying in a hotel may be the longest look at architecture you ever take.
Morning light, lamps at night, a corridor on a rainy day. In hours no tour will show you, a building changes its face. SUMIBIKI visits hotels designed by architects one at a time, and writes where to stand and what to look at to read the building.
Our name and logo
“Sumibiki” is the carpenter’s act of stretching an inked string from the ink pot and snapping a datum line onto timber. Like that single line drawn before building, we hope to be a guide for reading architecture.

Editorial policy
- Changing our view because of fees or advertising
- Writing about places we have not been as if we had
- Using photographs of buildings without credit
Research and fact-checking
We write from a night on site and from the architect’s own writings, architecture journals of the time and the hotel’s official records. Figures and dates are confirmed in at least two sources before we print them.
Corrections
When we find an error, we correct the article and record the date and the change at its end. If you notice anything, please let us know through the contact page.

About advertising
SUMIBIKI takes part in affiliate programmes of booking sites. When you book through a button in an article, SUMIBIKI may receive a referral fee. Whether or not there is a fee never changes what we write or how we judge.
